Abstract
1453114 Forging MOTOR WHEEL CORP 25 Jan 1974 [29 Jan 1973] 03514/74 Heading B3H An out-of-round sintered metal powder brake drum ring 10 is sized in a die 20 which has a frusto-conical surface 22 which engages the outer surface of the ring as it is moved relative to the die to first bend the outer surface of the ring into complete contact with the die surface and then radially compress the ring beyond its elastic limit. The ring is pushed into the die by a ram 40 or alternatively the die is pushed over the ring. A central pilot core 26 provides a flat surface 30 over which the ring is moved by a pusher 41 onto the upper surface 38 of an ejector 32 which may be spring-biased upwards. The sized ring does not contact the pilot core at the limit of its axial movement into the die. The ejector is operated by an hydraulic ram 60 through rods 58 . The metal powder of the ring may be iron mixed with graphite and wax. The ring forms the brake track of a brake drum. The die and workpiece may be lubricated.
