Abstract

1452758 Knitting machines M PHILIP 4 Dec 1973 [14 Dec 1972] 56034/73 Heading D1C In a multifeed circular knitting machine, a movement multiplier rocker 35 is so pivoted in the needle bed between each jack 34 and needle 33 that, for a given movement of the jack, a larger movement of the needle takes place. In the rotary cylinder and dial machine shown, the two parts 11, 12 of needle cylinder 10 are held together by bolts 15A and form between them a circumferential, recess 17 overhung by a lip 18 on part 11 which also has a circumferential recess 19 overhung by a lip 20. A rabbet 16 is formed in the lower end of part 12 and channels 21 extend from rabbet 16 to beyond lip 20 to receive steel walls 26 to form tricks 32. A rod 25 held in recess 17 passes right round the needle cylinder and forms a pivot for removable rockers 35. Each needle 33 has at least one butt 57 and at its lower end engages rocker 35 which also engages the upper end of a corresponding jack 34 with one control butt 53 and pattern butt or butts e.g. frangible butts. A jack 34 is raised by a cam and through rocker 35 raises corresponding needle 33 to welt position, the needle moving further than the jack. Further cams acting on butts 54 and- 57 of the jack and needle respectively raise the needle to tuck and clearing position. Movement of the needle down to knocking-over position by cams engaging butt 57 push the rocker and jack back to their initial position. The needle and jack cam assemblies comprise cam sections 70A, 70, 70B having cut outs 79, 80 which receive U-shaped inserts 81B, 81C with inner and outer webs 82A, 82B flush with the inner and outer faces of the body 76. Parallel oblique slots are provided in the webs to form guides for selectors 86. A retainer plate 88 adjacent each insert is releasably secured to the support 75 so as to be slidable between first and second positions in which its edge overhangs slots 85 to a greater or lesser degree. When a selector 86 is in its operational position, a shoulder 96 engages outer web 82B and is held in this position by plate 88 in its first position engaging edge 102 on selector 86. With the plate 88 in its second position, selector 86 can be slid outwardly until edge 103 opposite shoulder 96 engages plate 88. Selectors 86 correspond in levels to the jack butts 54. Cam elements 107, 109 on support 75 form cam tracks 108, 110 which control jack butts 53. Cam element 120 on support 75 provides a track for needle butts 57 and the butts of selected needles are engaged by spring biassed clearing bolt cams 122A, B, C whose oblique borders 133 cover the spaces between adjacent cams. Opposing cams 122A, B, C. There are adjustable stitch cams 137A, 137B which engage butts 57 to move the needles to knocking over position regardless of their previous position. Track 121 moves any jacks not moved forward by track 108 so that their corresponding needles are moved to welt position. Track 150 provides any other needle movement necessary.
