Abstract
1452734 Mineral wool GRANGES OXELOSUNDS JARNVERK AB 10 Feb 1975 [12 Feb 1974] 5647/75 Heading C1M The composition of still-molten blast furnace slag is modified, so as to enable it to be spun into mineral wool, by adding to the molten slag at least 10% by weight of the slag of a silicacontaining acidic oxide as additive, any heat losses (e.g. caused by melting of the additive) being replaced by supplying further heat to the melt. The molten slag may then be spun directly into mineral wool. The additive may be SiO 2 and/or chamotte, or granite scrap or sand, and is preferably heated before its addition to the melt. The heat losses may be replaced by combustion (e.g. of coal or oil) in the molten slag (thus agitating the melt), and/or by induction heating employing a bath of molten metal disposed beneath the molten slag. Preferably, molten slag is supplied to a processing furnace in which additive is added to achieve substantially the desired composition, and then passed to a homogenizing furnace in which the composition or temperature may be further adjusted. Two processing furnaces may be used to supply alternately molten slag to the homogenizing furnace.
