Abstract

1451168 Making superconducting wire; drawing AIRCO Inc 19 March 1974 [19 March 1973] 12095/74 Headings B3A and B3P [Also in Divisions H1 and C7] A composite superconducting wire including at least one high field type II superconducting strand is made by hot drawing a composite wire formed of at least one rod of one metal of the type II superconductor in a matrix of normally conducting metal and the other metal of the superconductor. After drawing the composite wire is heat treated to diffuse the said other metal of the matrix into the or each rod to provide one or more superconducting strands in a matrix. The rod may be vanadium in a matrix of copper and gallium or the rods may be niobium in a matrix of copper and tin. The type II superconductors formed are vanadium-gallium and niobium-tin. The hot drawing is performed at at least 100‹C. and may be as high as 600‹ C. The reduction per draw is 15-20%. The composite body may be formed by assembling rods in a predrilled casing or by pushing rods into a molten matrix. The composite body is then hot extruded into wire which may be cold drawn before being subjected to hot drawing and heat treatment. The heat treatment comprises holding the composite wire at 600‹ C. for 3-11 days or 120 hours or 6-10 hours to cause the type II superconducting alloy to be formed by diffusion of the wire and matrix.
