Abstract
1391357 Niobium-tin super-conductors THOMSON-BRANDT 26 June 1972 [29 June 1971] 29888/72 Headings H1A A5 and A4D A super-conductor based on the inter-metallic compound niobium-tin contains As and Sb each in amounts 50-500 p.p.m. Typically the superconductor is made by hot-dipping an Nb strip in Sn at about 900C in a vacuum, apparatus being described for use in a continuous process wherein the strip is heated by the Joule effect prior to dipping to out gas it and anneal it and is similarly heated after dipping to cause diffusion and production of Nb 3 Sn. The As + Sb may be added to the tin bath or may be applied to the strip before and/or after hot-dipping by evaporation techniques. The prepared strip may be subsequently coated electrolytically or by roll-cladding with Cu, Al, Cu-Be or stainless steel to improve its mechanical properties.
