Abstract

1296559 Super-conductors MASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON 17 Feb 1970 [17 Feb 1969] 7653/70 Headings H1A A5 and A4D A super-conductor cable comprises a hollow matrix of normally conductive material in which uniformly distributed stabilized conductors have been embedded by a drawing down process, in which each of the stabilized conductors comprises a plurality of super-conductor veins embedded in normally conductive material by a previous drawing down process. A stabilized conductor is produced by inserting rods of Nb-Ti alloy in a Cu billet, subjecting to pressure and reducing the cross-section at a temperature of 560 to 750‹C and then performing a plurality of cold working steps, e.g. drawing or rolling, to reduce the cross-section. A plurality of such stabilized conductors are inserted in holes in a further billet of Cu or Al which is extruded round a mandrel at 400 to 500‹C to form a central passage. The conductor is then cold drawn to its final size. The passage and the external surface of the cable may have a rectangular, polygonal or circular cross-section.
