Abstract

1450937 Carburizing steel strip BRITISH STEEL CORP 21 June 1974 [3 July 1973 22 March 1974] 31584/73 and 12874/74 Headings C7D and C7U A steel strip formed from powder, e.g. of high alloy tool or spring steel or martensitic Cr steel, having a C content of no more than 0À3% is rolled to its required gauge, and subsequently carburized in an atmosphere of, e.g. methane or propane. The strip may be produced by compacting wateratomized powder in contrarotating rolls and sintering the green strip in H 2 or Ar. If only part of the strip is to be carburized, e.g. for cutting edges of saw blades and razor blades, the remainder of the strip may be masked prior to carburization. The masking may be effected by applying a Cu or Niplating solution or a refractory oxide paste to the strip. In the Example, a water atomized steel powder containing 5À8% W, 4À6% Mo, 4À25% Cr, 2À01% V, 0À014% C, plus small amounts of Si, Mn, S, P and O, was rolled, the compacted powder being sintered at 1250‹C for 3 minutes in H 2 and cold-rolled by 30-70%. The powder may be annealed in H 2 prior to rolling. The cold-rolled strip was then carburized at 1050‹C for 3 hours.
