Abstract
1407748 Self-lubricating surfaces INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 13 March 1973 [31 March 1972] 12107/73 Heading C7U [Also in Division F2] A self-lubricated surface of carbon monofluoride is formed on high carbon iron. alloys, e.g. cast iron, by exposing the surface to an F 2 /inert gas mixture. The alloys are treated in a nickel chamber which is first purged with He or N 2 and heated to 200‹C, after which the alloy is introduced into the chamber and subjected to an atmosphere of F 2 in He or N 2 at 400-700‹ C. The partial pressure of the F 2 is less than 10 per cent, preferably 25 to rr. The treated alloy is rinsed in an alkaline solution to neutralize HF, and dried.
