Abstract

1496398 Treating steel surfaces to enhance wettability by molten metal; hot-dipping ARMCO STEEL CORP 8 May 1975 [24 May 1974] 19401/75 Heading C7F Steel strip or sheet containing an alloying element more readily oxidizable than Fe, in at least a critical amount sufficient to lead, on oxidation, to an external coating of oxide of said element on the steel, is passed continuously through a furnace and heated to 593-913‹C in an oxidizing atmosphere to form a coating of iron oxide containing oxide of said element and then the steel is heated to 427-927‹C in a hydrogen-containing atmosphere to form a coating of a pure Fe matrix containing a dispersion of oxide of said alloying element. Said element may be up to 3% Al, up to 1% Ti, up to 2% Si, and/or up to 5% Cr, After treatment, the steel is hot-dipped in Zn or Al or their alloys or terne alloy. The process may be a modified Sendzimir process, wherein the oxidation is at 593-760‹C in air followed by reduction at 815-927‹C in an atmosphere of N 2 containing at least 20% H 2 , or a modified Selas (RTM) process wherein for the oxidation there is used an atmosphere of gaseous combustion products containing 0-6% excess O 2 and no excess combustibles at 760 -913‹C; reduction is as above. The steel is hot-dipped whilst still surrounded by the reducing atmosphere.
