Abstract

1450165 Shovelling machines CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 11 Sept 1973 [11 Sept 1972] 42590/73 Heading E1F [Also in Division H3] Apparatus for controlling the position of a vehicle component, e.g. a loader bucket, which can be positioned by a ram 20, 22 coupled to the component, the apparatus comprising a control member 28 operable to control the extension and contraction of the ram and arranged to be self returning from a selected operating position, an electrically operable latch 36 arranged to hold the control member 28 in said selected operating position when the latch is operative, and means responsive to reciprocation of the piston rod 22 of the ram 20, 22 for controlling operation of the latch and arranged so that the latch is rendered operative in response to movement of the piston rod in one direction and is rendered inoperative in response to movement of the rod in the other direction. Preferably the latch 36 is an electromagnet and the control member 28 is a manually pivotable control lever operatively coupled to a self-centring control element of a control valve of the ram. The means responsive to reciprocation of the piston rod 22 comprise first and second magnetic fieldresponsive switches 42, 44 controlled by magnetic field-producing means 48 mounted on the piston rod 22. The switches are so incorporated in the transistorised control circuit 46 of the latch 36 as to appropriately energise and de-energise the latch in accordance with the direction of movement of the piston rod 22, the circuit energising the latch when the second switch 44 becomes conductive and de-energising the latch when the first switch becomes conductive. The circuit 46 involves the first switch 42 being coupled to the base of a transistor 62, an additional transistor 64 having a base coupled to the collector of the transistor 62 and a silicon controlled rectifier 66 having an anode coupled to the emitter of the transistor 64, a cathode coupled to the base of a further transistor 60 having an emitter coupled to the latch, and a gate coupled to the second switch 44.
