Abstract
1449851 Ceramic-metal seals THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 July 1974 [10 July 1973] 32729/73 Heading B3V [Also in Division H1] The tungsten filament 12 of a lamp is supported along its length within a tubular envelope by a number of shaped ceramic plates 14 which are a shrink fit on the filament. Initially the ceramic plates are oversized, e.g. 8À2 mm. in diameter and 0À63 mm. thick, and with the filament 12 and link rod 15 are mounted in a molybdenum jig and fired in a hydrogen tube furnace for 2 hours at 1750‹ C. This firing effects the shrink fitting, with the ceramic plates in the final structure being 6À6 mm. in diameter and 0À5 mm. thick. The ceramic plates may be of alumina, magnesia, yttria, thoria or common spinel, and in one example the composition is given as Al 2 O 3 powder plus 0À05% MgO and 0À05% Y 2 O 3 .
