Abstract

1448663 Motor cycle fuel tanks; frames P W BOTHWELL 17 Sept 1973 [15 June 1972] 27982/72 Headings B7H and B7E The fuel tank 22 of a motor cycle, scooter or moped is disposed behind an engine 19 in a space defined by the frame 10 to reduce the risk of the tank being damaged in a crash, and an inlet passage 34 extends upwardly from the inlet port 34 of the engine to a carburettor or fuel injector 26 located above the engine. The frame 10 defines an enclosure in which the engine 19 and a gear-box 20 are located, the tank 22 being disposed wholly with the lateral confines of a space surrounded by the engine 19, gearbox 20 and the upper and rear parts 11, 14 of the frame. The frame 10 may include struts 43 arranged to protect the sides of the tank 22, and the tank contains a foam-filled bag which prevents rapid escape of fuel if the tank is ruptured. The carburetter or fuel-injector 26 draws in air through a filter 27 and is supplied with fuel by a pump 25. A heat shield 24 is arranged between the engine 19 and the tank 22, and an oil tank 35 is located below the engine 19 and gear-box 20. A hinged cover 37 giving access to the fuel tank filler cap 23 merges with a detachable cover 36 over the air filter 27 to form a smoothly contoured body blending into a frontal fairing 41.
