Abstract

1448103 Castors F DRABFRT 6 Nov 1973 [5 June 1973] 51378/73 Heading A4U A castor comprises a housing 1 which is rotatable about a vertical axis of a spindle 4 and has a wheel 5 mounted in it for rotation about a horizontal axis, the periphery of the wheel protruding below the rim of the housing a distance such that in use the housing is engageable with the floor to prevent toppling of an article of furniture, e.g. a chair, to which the castor is fitted. The wheel axle 6 is held in recesses in the housing by brackets (20) releasably secured by screws, Figs. 7 to 10 (not shown). The housing is pressure moulded. A brake spring 10 engages the wheel periphery and is adjustably pre-stressed by selective engagement in any one of holes 9 in the housing. The rim of the housing is castellated, the projections 11 being formed of or fitted with rubber, e.g. caps 11b. The outer edges 11a of the projections may be straight. In a second embodiment, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the spring 10 is replaced by a two armed spring which is pivoted about a securing screw with one arm engaging the wheel periphery and the other arm selectively engaged in one of a series of holes arranged in an arc about the pivot. Alternatively, the other arm may be engaged behind a selected one of a series of pins arranged in an arc about the pivot, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown).
