Abstract

1448006 Processing photographic silver halide materials PHILIP A HUNT CHEMICAL CORP 7 Dec 1973 [7 Dec 1972] 56799/73 Heading G2C A method of processing exposed black-andwhite photographic silver halide materials to obtain a non-lithographic black-and-white image having reduced fog and haze comprises (i) developing the material and then (ii) concurrently fixing and bleaching the image with a bath containing a thiosulphate fixing agent and a bleaching agent, e.g. a chelated ferric or cobaltic salt, so that low density areas of the image are bleached at a rate greater than areas of heavier density, the latter being substantially unaffected. The selective bleaching, which substantially removes fog and haze, is effected by suitable selection of bleaching agent concentration of the duration and temperature of bleaching, the presence or absence of bleach accelerators and other parameters. Bleaching agents specified include ferric complexes of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, hydroxyethylethylenediaminetriacetic acid, ethylenediamine-ohydroxyphenylacetic acid, diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid, ortho-diaminocyclohexanetetraacetic acid and ethylene glycol bis-(aminoethyl ether) tetraacetic acid. Accelerators include thiourea, N-hydroxyethylthiourea, ethylenethiourea and N-alkylthiourea.
