Abstract

1446234 Reciprocating pumps K H THOMAS [trading as LANGEN & CO] 16 Oct 1973 [25 Oct 1972] 48147/73 Heading F1A A pump for supplying two circuits, e.g. for a motor vehicle, comprises opposed-acting pistons 5, 6 delivering through lines 14, 17 to circuits 15, 18, change-over valves 22, 23 being responsive to delivery pressure so that when a predetermined circuit pressure is exceeded the valves connect the pumping chambers to a by-pass line 21 connected to the respective circuits by check-valves 26, 27, so that if circuit 15 reaches its predetermined pressure before circuit 18 valve 22 is operated so that piston 5 delivers to circuit 18, via valve 27, with piston 6, and when both circuits are at their predetermined pressure both valves 22, 23 are operated and the pistons idle with their pumping chambers inter-connected by line 21. As shown, the pistons draw from a common reservoir 12. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the pistons draw from separate reservoirs via piston-controlled cylinder ports and the change-over valves function to change-over the reservoir connections to the cylinder ports when they connect the respective pumping chambers to the by-pass line, thereby preventing draining of both reservoirs if a leakage occurs in one of the circuits. Accumulators 19, 20 are provided. The change-over valves may have hysteresis devices to prevent excessively frequent change-overs.
