Abstract
1445973 Rotary positive-displacement fluidmachines R G CARTWRIGHT 27 Sept 1973 [22 July 1972 6 Sept 1972] 34383/72 and 41229/72 Heading F1F An engine, pump, motor or compressor comprises a casing 5 having a circular cross-section main chamber 6 with which communicate two auxiliary chambers 7, 8 of part-circular section, a main rotor 9 of elliptical shape rotatable about a central shaft 10 within the chamber 6 such that the apices 9A, 9B of the rotor sweep the walls of the chamber 6, auxiliary rotors 7A, 8A also of elliptical shape mounted for rotation such that their apices sweep the walls of the respective chambers 7 or 8 and adjacent surfaces of the main rotor 9, a gear train 14 to connect the rotors 9, 7, 8, for rotation in the same direction R and at the same speed, an inlet port 15 for working fluid leading into each of the auxiliary chambers, and exhaust ports 16 leading from the main chamber 6 and located just before each of the auxiliary chambers in the direction of rotation. The main rotor 9 is fitted with apex seals 11 and peripheral seals 12 and the rotors 7A, 8A are similarly sealed. As an alternative to the gear train 14, a chain or toothed belt may be employed. In an alternative embodiment the main rotor has four apices and four auxiliary rotor chambers are provided equally spaced round the periphery of the main rotor chamber, the auxiliary rotors 7A, 8A being arranged to rotate at twice the speed of the main rotor 9.
