Abstract

1445700 Furnace linings VEITSCHER MAGNESITWERKE AG 21 Dec 1973 [22 Dec 1972] 59516/73 Heading F4B A unit for use in refractory linings for furnaces &c., comprises a moulded body 1 with grooves 15 and tongues 16 and a planar metallic interlayer 2 bonded at 4 to the moulded body. When the lining is heated the interlayer 2 is pressed into the grooves 15 by the tongues 16 on the neighbouring unit. Flat ledges 18 with interposed metallic interlayers in contact over the whole width of the units ensure lining stability from first construction. In another form of embodiment, Figs. 2 and 4 (not shown), grooves (35) and tongues (36) run at right angles to the temperature gradient between the interior face 11 and cold face 12. In an embodiment suitable for rotary cement furnaces, Fig. 5 (not shown), the grooves (57) are deeper than necessary for the tongues (56) to ensure a deposit of cement clinker is collected on the wall of the furnace. Expansion in two directions can be provided for by grooves and tongues on the four side surfaces of the moulded body, Fig. 6 (not shown), and an angled metallic interlayer can be used in place of separate interlayers 2 and (21). The grooves and tongues may have other configurations such as being of tapered depth or of stepwise change in depth, Figs. 7-9 (not shown). The number of grooves and tongues can be varied according to the size of the unit, and the interlayer may spread over several moulded bodies. The interlayers consist, preferably, of plates of sheet metal particularly sheet steel, but perforated plates, wire netting or rolled metal may be used.
