1,194,659. Metal-cased refractory bricks. DRESSER INDUSTRIES Inc. 13 Dec., 1968 [14 Dec., 1967], No. 59442/68. Heading F4B. In a refractory arch roof construction for furnaces, wherein the roof is formed of courses of refractory bricks, and each of said bricks has an oxidizable metal case over at least two intersecting side surfaces to provide thermal expansion allowance laterally and longitudinally of the roof upon initial furnace heating, sheets of asbestos material are disposed between a sufficient number of bricks to provide from # to “ inch thickness of asbestos sheet per linear foot of roof laterally and longitudinally. As shown, the refractory bricks 24, which are encased within two overlapping U-shaped metal cases having crimps provided at the hot ends thereof, have side surfaces measuring nominally 4¢ by 3 inch. On the 4¢ inch surface, as illustrated by rows A and C, sheets of alternatively <SP>1</SP>/ 16 and # inch thickness are disposed between every other pair of adjacent bricks. In rows B and D, sheets of <SP>1</SP>/ 16 inch thickness are disposed between 3 bricks out of 4. Along the 3 inch surface of the brick, as shown in rows E and G, sheets of asbestos <SP>1</SP>/ 8 inch in thickness are disposed between every other pair of adjacent bricks, while in rows F and H, sheets of asbestos <SP>1</SP>/ 16 inch in thickness are disposed between every pair of adjacent bricks.
