Abstract

1445092 Surgical drainage appliance T G EAKIN 15 Aug 1973 [16 Aug 1972] 38267/72 Heading A5R A drainage appliance comprises a flexible watertight bag having a front wall 10 and an intermediate wall 30 with an aperture for a stoma, means for securing the bag to a patient in the region of the stoma, a pair of cushions for the stoma within the bag, and flushing means through which liquid may be introduced above the stoma between the cushions and into the bag. The bag may have a rear wall 40, an intermediate wall 30, a double thickness valve defining wall 21, 22 and a front wall with pleats 13 joined together at their edges to form inlet and storage compartments 36 and 16 from which an outlet passage 15 depends. A skirt (23) Fig. 1 not shown forms a non-return valve between the inlet and storage compartments 36, 16. A continuation of the outlet passage 15 is formed by edge-forming tails 12, 37 of the intermediate and front walls. A flushing facility is provided by the holes (32) Fig. 1 (not shown) in the intermediate wall 30 above the stoma aperture 31 which may be supplied with fluid via passages 34 from a passage formed by edge joining the tail 42 to the tail 37. A pocket 45 retains the folded tails thus closing the flushing and drainage passages. Cushioning air pockets to protect the stoma in use are formed in the valve defining wall by pleats between the layers 21, 22. A sealing ring 54 is located in a space formed by a weld joining the rear and intermediate walls concentric with the stoma aperture. The bag is secured to a patient by a ring 66 placed between the rear wall 40 and a support wall (50) and secured to a belt; also a double sided adhesive plaster 65 located around the stoma, supports the bag. The cushions may alternatively be constructed on the intermediate wall (130) Fig. 5 (not shown) and may be filled with soft foam or foam granules. The supporting belt is formed from apertured sheets (71, 72) Fig. 8 (not shown) with an elastic strip (74) secured at (75) to the sheets and passing through apertures (76) therein. The bag is preferably made of translucent plasticized sheet and the sealing ring of Karaya with an oil carrier or of a sponge impregnated with dry gum starch or Karaya.
