1443414 Isolation chambers NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 10 July 1973 [11 July 1972] 32380/72 Heading A5R An isolation chamber 10 comprises a doublewalled conduit 13 communicating with the interior of the chamber 10, and an air inlet 24 for supplying sterilised air between the walls 19, 20 of the conduit 13, the inner wall 19 having an array of openings 27 arranged so that sterilised air may be directed over the inner surface of the free end of the conduit 13 to flow outwardly and substantially prevent the passage of unsterilised air into the conduit 13. The conduit 13 is secured to the chamber wall 11 by means of the thermoweld 16 around a rigid ring 17, and adhesive tape 18. The conduit 13 is formed from flexible plastics material, welded along lines 21 to define inflatable ribs 22, 23 and the outer wall 20 is connected to an air inlet pipe 26 via a sterilising filter 25. Alternatively, the filter may consist of glass wool between the walls 19, 20. In an alternative embodiment, the conduit 13 has suspension means (31-36), Fig. 3, (not shown), another inflatable rib (23'), and two weld tines (21') which separate the upper and lower sets of ribs 22 which communicate with an air inlet chamber (37) through holes (38, 39), and the inner wall 19 is formed of canvas. In another embodiment, both walls 19, 20 may be rigid and the ribs may be dispensed with. The conduit 13 may be closed by a weighted flap or by a conduit which is closed by a zipfastened sheet. The array of openings 27 extends over a length of the conduit which is generally between one and two times the minimum transverse dimension of the conduit 13.
