Abstract

144,448. Thornycroft & Co., J. I., and Thornycroft, Sir J. I. May 8, 1919. Screw propellers.-A propeller for navigable vessels is adapted to ride over obstructions such as booms, comprises helical blades a which are secured at their ends to two independent bosses c, c<1> mounted on the propeller shaft. The enveloping surface swept out by the screw corresponds to that swept out by a parabola b, and the distance A-B between the ends of the screw is greater than the maximum diameter of the screw. The blades have no free ends. The forward boss c is tapered internally and secured to the shaft e by a tapered split bush d which is forced into position by a nut f. Each half of the bush d may be spliced to the shaft. The rear bush may be fixed to the shaft in the usual way.
