Abstract

1443024 Foamed melamine formaldehyde resins MELAMINA ULTRA SA INDUSTRIA QUIMICA and COORDENACAO DOS PROGRAMAS DE POS-GRADUACO DE ENGENHARIA DA UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DO RIO DE JANEIRO-COPPE UFRJ 22 Oct 1973 49072/73 Heading C3C A rigid closed cell foam is made by expanding a mixture of water, an acid surface active agent and at least one melamine-formaldehyde prepolymer, and allowing the prepolymer to polymerize to form a rigid closed cell foam having a compressive strength of 5À0-80 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> (as defined). In the example a melamine/formaldehyde prepolymer aq. solution was formed and this was added to a foam made by agitating or passing gas into an aq. solution of an anionic acid detergent (the gas may be prepared in situ or supplied from an external source); an acid polymerization catalyst is then optionally added agitation is continued, a filler optionally added and the composition is moulded to form a closed cell rigid foam.
