Abstract
1442524 Cryogenic switch SIEMENS AG 14 May 1974 [14 May 1973] 21399/74 Heading H1N An electrical switch for shortcircuiting a superconductive coil has contacts 6, 7 which contain stabilized superconductive material and has drive means in the form of spring bellows 10, 13, for closing and opening the contacts. These bellows are fed with a cryogenic medium, preferably liquid helium, from a cryostat through pressure lines 12, 14, one connecting respectively with each bellows. The switch body may be in the form of two telescoping cylinders, so that to close the contacts 6, 7 one bellows 10 is expanded carrying a moving contact 7 with it into contact with a fixed contact 6 whilst to open them the second bellows 13 is expanded moving the two body cylinders apart to carry the one bellows 10 and its associated contact away from the fixed contact 6. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2, not shown, a single bellows is pressurized to open the contacts and they are closed by a spring when the pressure in the bellows is relieved. The superconducting material in the contacts is stabilized by being in good electrical contact with normally conductive material, as superconductive wires in a copper matrix.
