Abstract

1441540 Sacrificial anodes L HOSSLE 10 Oct 1974 [13 Oct 1973] 43891/74 Heading C7E [Also in Division G1] An anode, Fig.1, having a magnesium body 1 has its iron rod core 2 pulled or pushed partly out of the body so that a perforated tube of the same diameter as the rod may be introduced into the core passage following an amount of a metal cement until it abuts and is fixed to the rod, the end of the rod pushed out is then cut-off. In Fig. 2 the perforated metal tube 3 is welded or soldered at 4 to the rod and is hermetically sealed from the space surrounding the anode by the anodic material surrounding and cladding the tube, and an unperforated portion 3a extends for connection to a pressure or vacuum circuit, Fig.4 (not shown) operating an electric switch (15a), signal lamps (16, 17) and a horn (18), which electric devices indicate either a satisfactory condition of the anode or give warning of its near complete corrosion when the hermetic seal breaks down and permits pressure to pass through to the switch. A metal cap 7 with a flatted head 8 and an internal sleeve 8a is pushed on to the material 1 and is provided with a thread 6 so that it may be fixed into say a tank 11. To protect that region of the anode in which the tube 3 is situated from premature consumption it may be covered by a plastics sleeve so that corrosion takes place initially on the uncased portion of the anode and proceeds to the cased portion from which corrosion now spreads axially and radially towards the metal tube.
