Abstract
820,446. Making electric lamps and like devices. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Feb. 28, 1957 [Feb. 28, 1956], No. 6215/56. Class 39(2) In order to expedite the flushing and/or gas filling of the envelope of an electric incandescent lamp or like device provided with only a single pumping stem or exhausting tube 4, the flushing gas is introduced into the envelope through a tube 28 which has an external diameter less than the internal diameter of the pumping stem 4, the tube 9 being inserted through the latter until its outlet orifice lies within the envelope, whereby the flushing gas together with any impurities flushed out by it is withdrawn through the space between the walls of the two tubes. The arrows within the lamp bulb, Fig. 2, indicate the inward and outward directions of the flushing gas. A vacuum pump may be connected to provide a continuous exhausting action. In the example the lower end of the pumping stem 4 of the lamp bulb 2 is located in known manner within an apertured rubber gland 5 at the upper end of a tubular chamber 6 which is provided with a similar gland tat its lower end, the tightening of a cap nut such as 10 on the respective glands acting to provide a hermetic seal between the end of the pumping stem 4 and the upper gland 5 and between a tube 26 and the lower gland. The tube 26, which is slidable through the lower gland is connected through a lateral tube at its lower end to a source of flushing gas, e.g. nitrogen or a mixture of argon and nitrogen and at its upper end is provided with a circular metal disc 27 with a small central hole into which the lower end of a metal flushing tube 28 is welded. The disc 27 preferably engages the inside wall of the chamber 6 with a sliding contact to guide the upward movement of the tube 26 in bringing the upper end of the tube 28 from a lower position wherein it is in the plane of the flange 7 of the chamber 6 to the position shown in Fig. 2. Perforations 27a in the disc 27 allow gas to pass freely along the outsides of the tubes 26, 28. In order that the tube 28 may extend through the pinch 31 of the lamp the pinch is made substantially V-shaped in section, Fig. 3. The chamber 8 has a metal side tube (not shown in Fig. 2) for connection to a vacuum pump.
