Abstract

1441151 Pneumatic looms CROMPTON & KNOWLES CORP 26 June 1973 [24 July 1972] 30244/73 Heading D1E In a pneumatic loom, weft equivalent to a fraction of the pick length is blown into a dummy shuttle 30 by a nozzle 56 passing through a picking chamber 52 and projecting into the shuttle, the shuttle is then picked by blowing air into the chamber 52 and simultaneously blowing air through nozzle 56 to eject the weft passing therethrough after the shuttle 30. A cam-controlled clamp 184 closes when sufficient weft has been drawn from the supply 186. Weft is cut and clamped by devices (29) Fig. 1 (not shown) mounted at the ends of the sley, and the weft end projecting from nozzle 56 is drawn back by puller 180. Air is supplied to chamber 52 and nozzle 56 from a high pressure air source (90) Fig. 1 (not shown) via valves 122 and 124, which are controlled by slide valves 130, 132 operated by common sliding frame (163) Fig. 2 (not shown) which is reciprocated by a cam (168). Air is also supplied to nozzles 56 from a low pressure air source (148) via a valve 146, to blow the weft into shuttle 30. Valve 146 operates to close itself as soon as high pressure air is supplied to nozzle 56 to eject the weft after the shuttle. Dummy Shuttles, Figure 12. The shuttle 30, which is double acting comprises a cylindrical body 226 with an internal cavity 34 which narrows towards each end. In the centre of cavity 34 is a generally spherical member 36 with oblique slots 42 therein in order to create a vortex air flow when the weft is blown in, to form the weft into coils in the shuttle 30. Shuttles guiding; reeds, Figures 10 and 20. The shuttle 30 is guided in the shed by plates 206 having a circular aperture 212, and a slot 214 through which the weft passes as the sley withdraws from beat-up. The rear edge 218 of aperture 212 serves to beat the weft up. The plates 206 and their spacing is so dimensioned that the shuttle is supported by a cushion of air as it passes through. In an alternative embodiment, Figure 20, the slot 214' extends generally vertically and a vertical extension 238 of the plate 206' beats-up. Shuttles checking. The shuttle 30 is checked by pneumatically operated swells 64 in the bore 52 from which the shuttle is picked and into which it is received. The swells slide radially inwards when high pressure air is supplied to them, as the shuttle arrives from valve 94, which is controlled by a slide valve 116 attached to the sliding frame (163). The shuttle 30 is brought to a complete stop by a yieldable stop 60 which has a series of annular grooves 62 to increase its yieldability. Beat-up motions Figures 21 and 22. In one embodiment, Figure 21, the sley is driven by a pair of conjugate cams 254, 254 acting on follower rollers 250, 252 on arms 246, 248 attached to the sley. Alternatively, Figure 22, where the guide plates 206' are as in Figure 20, the sley swords are short, and are oscillated via pivoted levers 268, 267 and 262 driven by conjugate cams 254' and 256'.
