Abstract
1441067 Seaming non-metallic sheet material IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 March 1975 [16 April 1974] 16446/74 Heading B5K Two thermoplastic polymeric sheets are seamed together by causing the sheets to converge and directing towards the line of convergence at least one focused beam of energy from a laser. The sheets may be films or knitted woven or non-woven fabrics containing thermoplastic continuous filaments or staple fibres, e.g. crimped polyester fibres. During seaming, the sheets may be held stationary relative to each other and to the laser beam or there may be a stepwise or continuous relative movement between the laser beam and the sheets. If the laser beam is movable, its position relative to the sheets may be controlled by a programmer e.g. a punched tape or a magnetic tape. The sheets may be brought together by passing them bwtween two plates, around two bars or between two moving belts. The laser beam, which is preferably pulsed or chopped, may be oscillated over a narrow width to produce a seam comprising two or more rows of weld points. After seaming, the fabric may pass into a laser cutting device controlled by the same programmer which controls the seaming laser. As shown, apparatus for seaming together two fabrics to produce garments comprises fabric supply rolls 1, 2 and driven nip rolls 3, 4 to bring the fabrics together. Two pulsed laser beams 5, 6 are traversed along the nip 7 be tween the rolls 3, 4, the speed of the rolls 3, 4 and the positions of the beams 5, 7 being controlled by a computer. The seams form shoulder seams 10 and side seams 9 of a dress which is subsequently cut-out.
