Abstract

1441049 Making wheel rims LEIFELD & CO 1 Aug 1974 [28 Aug 1973] 34079/74 Heading B3A A method of making a wheel rim having a slant shoulder with an erected wheel flange on one end of the rim and a recessed spring ring groove on the other end of the rim comprises spinning a sheet metal blank to form the spring ring groove, stretching or drawing the blank to the desired wall thickness, and erecting or raising an end of the rim to form the wheel flange. A recess is formed adjacent the groove as a support for the spring ring by a spinning operation during the stretching of the blank. The stretching of the blank can be performed in two roll passes with the slant shoulder being formed adjacent to the wheel flange in the course of the second roll pass and having an inclined surface of 5 degrees. Stretching of the rim base and formation of the slant shoulder may be performed in a single chucking step.
