Abstract

1440393 Electrical resistance thermometers BAILEY METER CO 14 June 1973 [14 June 1972] 28251/73 Heading H1K The resistive film 14<SP>11</SP> of an electrical resistance thermometer element 10<SP>11</SP> is deposited on a glass layer 11<SP>11</SP> on a rigid base member 12<SP>11</SP> and is hermetically sealed by an overlying coating 20<SP>11</SP>, preferably also of glass. Planar alternatives to the cylindrical structure shown are also described. The glass layer 11<SP>11</SP>, resistive film 14<SP>11</SP>, (e.g. of Pt or Ni) and glass coating 20<SP>11</SP> are preferably all deposited by r.f. sputtering on the base member 12<SP>11</SP>, which may be of sapphire) aluminium oxide or a ceramic, and r.f. sputtering may also be used to selectively remove material to define the desired meandering shape of the resistive film 14<SP>11</SP>. A housing for the element 10<SP>11</SP>, permitting it to be used to monitor the temperature of fluid flowing in a conduit, is also described (Fig. 1, not shown).
