Abstract
587,996. Thermo-electric batteries ; electric resistances. HATFIELD, H. S. Jan. 3, 1945, No. 315. [Classes 37 and 53] [Also in Groups XXII and XXXVIII] The amount of heat passing through a wall, such as that of a boiler, is measured by cementing to the wall a disc, comprising a sheet of commercial tellurium 1, coated on both sides 2, 3 with a material such as copper or silver having a high thermo-electric power compared with the tellurium, and connecting the two coatings to a galvanometer 4. Two thermojunctions are thus formed the net EMF of which gives the difference in temperature between the two sides of the disc and thus the amount of heat flowing. The copper is rhodium-plated to prevent copper telluride being formed. Constantan or other materials, of which nickel and silicon are mentioned in the Provisional Specification, may be used instead of tellurium if high sensitivity is not required. In a modification, a disc is used comprising a sheet of electrically insulating material coated on both sides with material, such as semi-conductors having high temperature coefficients of resistance and the difference of temperature of the two coatings measured by a differential arrangement.
