Abstract
1439556 Fluorinating organic acid halides electrolytically CIBA-GEIGY AG 29 Aug 1974 [11 Sept 1973] 37905/74 Heading C7B [Also in Division C2] Organic acid halides are electrolytically fluorinated using a Ni or Ni alloy anode and metal cathode at an electrode spacing of 6-12mm using liquid HF electrolyte at 20-50 C and a voltage of 9-15 Vd.c. The halide may be a chloride, fluoride or bromide of a 4-18C alkylsulphonic or carboxylic acid e.g. octane sulphofluoride or n-heptane-1- carboxylic acid fluoride. The halide may be used at 5-20% wt. concentration in commercial anhydrous HF, at a pressure of up to 5 bars, with a current density of 10-100mA/cm<SP>2</SP>. A cathode of Fe, steel, Al, Cu, Ni or a Ni alloy may be used.
