Abstract
1536211 Electrowinning manganese UNIVERSITE LIBRE DE BRUXELLES 27 May 1976 [27 May 1975] 22105/76 Heading C7B Ferromanganese is contacted with an iron chloride in the presence of molten electrolytically inert chloride(s) (e.g. of Na and Ca) to obtain a liquid rich in Mn chloride and a solid Fe-containing precipitate, the liquid being optionally contacted with more FeMn and then electrolyzed. The liquid may pass through the cathode compartment and the solids through the anode compartment whereby Fe chloride is anodically regenerated. The contacting may be effected in the anode compartment by adding FeMn whereby the Fe chloride is generated in situ, the anolyte obtained being freed of solids and passed to a non-electrolytic contacting step where more FeMn is added to remove excess Fe chloride and the final liquid used as catholyte. Alternatively C12 generated anodically may be used externally of the cell to regenerate Fe chlorides from the Fe-containing solids.
