Abstract

1438211 Centrifugal compressors INGERSOLL-RAND CO 30 Jan 1974 [10 April 1973] 04360/74 Heading F1C A multi-stage centrifugal compressor unit comprises three parallel compressor housings 16, 18, 20 extending perpendicularly from one wall 22 of a gear housing 14, the gear housing also having a second parallel outer wall 24 to define a space in which is mounted a driving gear 26 in mesh with both a gear 30 on a shaft of the compressor 16 and an idler gear 28, the latter meshing with gears 32, 32' on shafts of the compressors 18, 20 respectively. Each compressor shaft (e.g. shaft 50, Fig. 5) extends from the outer end of its respective compressor housing where it is located in a retainer (66), Fig. 5A (not shown), through both gear housing walls 22, 24 and is retained by lock nuts 58. To remove the shaft complete with impeller blades and diffusers, the cover 78 is removed, the lock nuts 58 unfastened, a collar 59 extracted which also withdraws the gear 32, the retainer (66) is removed from the opposite end and the shaft removed from left to right in Fig. 5. Gas is admitted to the first compressor via an inlet 46, is passed to the inlet 46' of the second compressor from an outlet (48) Fig. 2, (not shown), and to the inlet 46" of the third compressor from an outlet 48'. Gas passes out of the unit via an outlet 48". A lubricating passage 38 extends substantially around the gear housing thus reducing noise and has an inlet 74 and outlet pipes 42 directed on to the gears. Spent lubricant drains down passages 44.
