Abstract
1321524 Gas turbine engines McCULLOCH CORP 10 Nov 1971 [ 8 Dec 1970] 52253/71 Headings F1C, F1G and FIT The invention relates to a gas turbine engine in which a common rotor disc is utilized both as a compressor and as a turbine. The engine comprises a casing 10 which comprise a rim 36 having inwardly extending lateral flanges 38 in which semi-circular section annular grooves 42 are formed. The rotor comprises a disc 16 mounted on a shaft 14 the disc being formed with a rim portion 18 in which semi-circular section annular grooves 24 are formed at each side, the grooves 24, 42 co-operating to form a toroidal shaped groove. Blades 26 are mounted in the grooves 24 of the rotor to form spaces or pockets (28). An air inlet 56 is provided at each side of the casing, air flowing there through to an opening 66 by which it enters the spaces (28), the air then flowing in a spiral manner in the co-operating grooves 24, 42 in the rotor and casing whereby the air is compressed. The air so compressed discharges through openings 50 and passages 48 into the combustion chamber 44. Combustion gases pass from the chamber through passages 52 and openings 54 into the pockets (28) so driving the rotor. The gases discharge through openings 60 to exhaust outlets 62. Further openings 72 and outlet ducts 70 are provided adjacent the inlet openings 66 and exhaust openings 60 whereby a portion of inflowing air can scavenge any exhaust gases remaining in the rotor pockets (28), the scavenging air and remaining, exhaust gases being discharged through outlets 70. Baffle members (74), (76) Fig. 5 (not shown) are provided in the casing grooves 42 to guide the compressed air into the combustion chamber and to direct the exhaust gases into the exhaust passages 62.
