Abstract

1438001 Fire safety system in a building K G SMOKE DISPERSAL Ltd 21 June 1974 [26 June 1973] 30345/73 Heading ASA A fire safety system in a building having a plurality of accommodation units 7', 8', 9..14 and a plurality of communal units 6, 7 and 8 providing means of access to the accommodation units wherein the accommodation units are not bonded by any exterior walls of the building and have no communication with the walls except through the accommodation units, comprises a plurality of smoke detectors 19, 20 and 21 in the communal units which on detection of smoke actuate fans 22, 23 and 24 to blow air under pressure into each communal unit, a plurality of self closing fire stop doors 15 to 18 between each communal unit and the adjacent communal unit, the doors normally being held open by electromagnetic locks 25 to 28 which are released by the smoke detectors on detection of smoke in order to restrict passage of smoke from a communal unit in which smoke has been detected to another communal unit. The fan 23 in shaft 1 is two speed and feeds air at low speed into 6 under normal conditions but on actuation by the smoke detector goes to the higher speed. Fans 22 and 24 under normal conditions suck air out of 7 and 8 into shafts 1 and 2 but on actuation by the smoke detector reverse their direction and blow air into the units. Each accommodation unit may be provided with unidirectional ventilators to allow air and smoke to leave the building.
