Abstract

1437806 Automatic control of course FERRANTI Ltd 25 Sept 1974 [26 Sept 1973] 45168/73 Heading G3R In a remote guidance system for bringing an under-water weapon within short range of a target whereupon a homing system on the weapon takes over, the remote system comprises sonar 11, 12 and a guidance control unit 13 carried by a guiding vehicle 10 to determine the bearing of the target and compute guidance information which is passed to the steering system 17 of weapon 16 via a communication channel 15, and a propulsion control means 14 whereby the weapon's speed and therefor noise can be reduced for a time and to a level sufficient for the target bearing to be determined. The target information can thus be updated at intervals. As shown the propulsion control means is carried by the vehicle 10 and its signals are transmitted to the weapon propulsion system 18 via the channel 15 which is a wire payed out behind the weapon. Alternatively the control means 14 may be on the weapon and synchronized with the guiding sonar. The latter is inoperative when the weapon is at full speed.
