Abstract

1536547 Aircraft guidance system FERRANTI Ltd 10 Aug 1976 [27 Aug 1975] 35437/75 Heading H4D A system for enabling aircraft to keep station when flying in formation involves transmitting from a master aircraft an optical (e.g. infra-red) beam which is narrow in azimuth, scanned in azimuth, and modulated to indicate the azimuth bearing of the beam at any instant relative to the forward direction of the aircraft. This beam is received on a slave aircraft by two or more spaced sensors. Provided that the two aircraft are on the same heading, the time interval between the instants when the sensors intercept the scanned beam is a measure of the distance between the aircraft. A computer on the slave aircraft determines this distance from the time interval and from the demodulated bearing data. Amplitude and pulse width modulation of the beam enable master aircraft identity and heading data to be transmitted in addition to the beam bearing.
