Abstract

1322848 Pulse compression radar SIEMENS AG 3 Nov 1971 [9 Nov 1970] 51011/71 Heading H4D A pulse compression system in which received signals are heterodyned with a locally generated signal whose frequency is modulated according to a predetermined time function before being fed to a frequency dependent delay device. In a radar system transmitted pulses having a frequency-time characteristic 10 are reflected from a target and received as signals 11. These are mixed with a local oscillator signal 12 giving a resultant signal 13. The modulation gradient of signal 13 is independent of the time of reception being the sum or difference of the transmitter and local oscillator gradients (depending on whether the sum or difference frequency mixed signals are utilized). The compression device is thus designed to produce a satisfactory compression for the predetermined frequency spread of signal 13. However the centre frequency of signal 13 depends on its time of arrival and thus the average delay of the compression device is range dependent. This necessitates some compensation in any display device but may be used to separate overlapping pulses. The local oscillator signal may undergo several cycles during each transmitter period and the modulation of the transmitter and local oscillator may be changed during successive periods whilst retaining the same resultant modulation gradient. The modulations may not be linear but their resultant is preferably linear (Fig. 5, not shown).
