Abstract
1,219,410. Radar ; radio signalling. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 12 June, 1968 [16 June, 1967], No. 27781/67. Headings H4D and H4L. In an F.M.C.W. secondary radar system a transponder (on another aircraft or on the ground) returns the incoming signal with a frequency-shifted carrier (Fig. 2, not shown), and the F.M. on the output of detector 5 is discriminated to give velocity and/or distance. The frequency-shift at the transponder may be height-coded (Fig. 3, not shown) and the system may be utilized for anti-collision. Timesharing may be adopted to facilitate multistation operation. To avoid synchronous modulation very low-frequency noise modulation may be added. Directional emission may be utilized. The F.M. may be sinusoidal or sawtooth.
