Abstract

1,248,221. Radio navigation. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 16 Jan., 1969 [19 Jan., 1968], No. 3065/68. Heading H4D. In a collision warning system each craft generates signals representative of its position x, y from a known land-based hyperbolic radio system (e.g. an Omega system), and of its velocity x, y, and broadcasts those signals. At a receiving craft a computer issues an alarm when (x 1 - x 2 )/(#x 1 - #x 2 ) = (y 1 - y 2 )/(#y 1 - #Y2) where the subscripts 1 and 2 refer to another craft and the receiving craft respectively. The transmitted signals may be coded digitally; this is stated to avoid distortion by Doppler effects. Height data may be utilized in addition. Each aircraft can transmit its data in an allotted time slot, using a circuit synchronized with the reception of the Omega system signals. The aircraft transmission may be monitored at traffic control centres.
