Abstract

1339552 Automatic speed control JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 19 April 1971 [29 April 1970] 20577/70 Heading G3R The speed of a vehicle 14 travelling in a lane 11 of a motorway is automatically regulated to maintain the spacing between vehicles substantially constant. An aerial 13 carried on the vehicle is energized by the vehicle battery 15 and an oscillator 16 and normally a current sensor 17 produces no output. As the aerial passes over energy absorbing devices 12 in the lane 11 the input current to sensor 17 changes and a pulse is produced. The pulses are fed to rectifier 18 where they are compared with a reference signal fed to a second receiver 19. An error signal representing the phase difference of the two signals operates a cruise control 21 which controls the vehicle speed. An alarm 22 may be incorporated to warn the driver of a blocked lane for example. Absorbing devices 12 comprise dipole aerials arranged on a flexible plastics strip laid in a slot along the lane or eddy current devices. The reference signal may be produced by a buried cable or may be a radio signal.
