Planting-tools. - A portable hand-operated fertilizer distributor is provided with a plate by which potatoes &c. may be pressed into the ground as the fertilizer is deposited. The distributor comprises a tubular body having a flaring lower end, a conical spreader within the lower end, a hopper above the body, a feeder tube, feeder valves, and an agitating and valve-operating rod extending through the hopper to a supporting and operating handle. The presser plate 18 is removably mounted on the conical spreader 16 which projects from the flaring end 11 of the tubular body 10. The conical lower part of the hopper 12 ends in a feed tube 14 projecting through the cap 20 of the body 10. Co-operating with the feed tube 14 are two relatively adjustable conical valves 24, 25 mounted on a rod 26 fastened to the handle 29. Agitating arms 28 are mounted on the rod 26. The hopper is provided with a hinged door 22 and with guides 31 in which work arms 30 depending from the handle 29 and furnished with adjustable stops 32. By depressing the handle 29, the spreader 16 is forced into the ground, the valves and stirrer moved, and a quantity of fertilizer distributed in a ring around the spreader. As the spreader is withdrawn from the ground it mixes the fertilizer with the soil.
