Abstract

Walls; double walls; reinforced block-work walls; reinforced-concrete beams.-Hollow building-blocks. whether stretcher, corner, or gable. are formed with bull-nosed openings 2 between the longitudinal partitions at the ends or side faces where the blocks abut. The openings 2 form air passages in the brickwork. The transverse ribs 5 are sunk between the top and bottom faces of the blocks. Fig. 1 shows a stretcher block, Fig. 2 shows a corner block, and Figs. 7 and 8 show a gable block. Either form of block may have three rows of passages 3, and a metal bar may be inserted in the angular passage of a corner block as a reinforcement for the wall. The blocks may be used as a facing to the inner or outer side of the concrete footing or foundation for a wall. At the top of the wall, a wooden beam 9, Fig. 13, to carry the roof is secured to the blocks by pegs 10 which engage the passages in the blocks. Reinforced-concrete lintels 21, Fig. 18, may be reduced in depth at their ends 22, as shown.
