Abstract

145,426. McLeod, W. June 18, 1919, [Convention date]. Reinforced-concrete walls; joist floors with block fining; columns. - Walls, floors, pillars, and arches are formed of hollow blocks of concrete or clay laid to break joint and the interior filled with concrete which forms a solid staggered or zigzag monolithic mass. Horizontal and vertical reinforcements may be added. The blocks 6a, Figs. 6 and 38, are formed with chamfers 6 on the inside, end grooves 2, and top recesses 3. The blocks 9<a>, Fig. 9, have one end open and splayed, and the end blocks 8<a>, Fig. 8, have flat ends without the grooves 2. Figs. 5 and 14 show corner blocks. The interior corners of the blocks are strengthened by fillets 15. In building a wall between two fixed points, spaces 24 which are left are filled with the concrete bv using mould boards 25 clamped together by bolts 29 which pass through handles 27 and either through the spaces 24 or over the wall. At the top of the handles are screws 30 which act as struts when the bolts 29 are tightened. Flat arches may be formed without lintels by reinforcing the interior with bars. A curved intrados, Fig. 54, is formed of concrete with the usual centering and may be reinforced. Pillars and curved work such as shafts are formed of curved blocks as shown in Figs. 46 and 47. Floors, Fig. 56, consist of rows of the blocks separated by spaces 32 which alone are filled with concrete, the blocks being left hollow. A top layer of concrete may be added to make the floor monolithic with the walls; or battens may be laid across the concrete beams to receive floor boards.
