Abstract

1433712 Electrolytic treatment of graphite fibres HERCULES Inc 6 June 1974 25208/74 Heading C7B Graphite fibres are surface treated, to improve their adhesion to a resin matrix in making fibre reinforced plastic composite materials, by electrolysis in an aqueous electrolyte solution of an ammonium compound which will decompose to gaseous products on heating (at less than 250‹C), e.g. ammonium (bi) carbonate, carbamate, benzoate, dithionate, hydrosulphide, sulphite, thiosulphate and/or tartrate, in which the fibres are in direct contact with and form part of the anodes and the electrical treatment level is sufficient, e.g. 0À5 to 15 coulombs/inch of fibre length, to liberate oxygen at the surface of the fibres. Prior art electrolyte solutions are disclosed of NaOH, KOH, H 3 PO 4 , HNO 3 or H 2 SO 4 . The graphite fibre may be prepared by heating fibrous polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl alcohol, pitch, natural or regenerated cellulose to carbonizing temperatures. The fibres are preferably surface treated and hot air dried continuously as shown.
