Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce activated carbon fiber with enhanced thermal oxidation resistance in a high carbonization yield by attaching cpds. contg. P and Zn to polyacrylonitrile type fiber in a predetermined ratio in flameproofing of the fiber.
CONSTITUTION: Polyacrylonitrile fiber to which Zn has been added in its production process by (co)polymn. is flameproofed (oxidized) in an oxidizing atmosphere at 200W300°C. It is desirable to well oxidize the fiber up to 75W85% of the quantity of satd. oxygen bonds at the oxidation temp., and the oxidation is pref. carried out under tension of 50W90% of the free shrinkage rate at the oxidation temp. The resulting flameproofed fiber is impregnated with a soln. contg. a P cpd. such as phosphoric acid and activated at 700W1000°C with activating gas such as steam to obtain desired activated carbon fiber. The total amt. of the P and Zn cpds. added is required to be 0.5W5 wt.% as metal to the amt. of the fiber.
