Abstract

1283714 Carbon fibres IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 12 June 1970 [9 July 1969] 34524/69 Heading C1A In producing carbon fibre, the organic polymeric fibre to be used is exposed to radiation of energy sufficient to cross-link the polymer to an extent such that the polymeric material remains in fibrous form on being heated in an oxidizing atmosphere, the fibre is then so oxidized and then heated in an inert atmosphere to carbonize. The so carbonized fibre may then be graphitized if so desired. The polymeric fibres used may comprise a polyolefine or a polymer of a vinyl halide. The polymeric fibre, at least in the oxidation stage, may be maintained so that it undergoes little or no shrinkage.
