Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently obtain uniformly activated fibrous activated carbon by gas- activating flameproofed acrylic fiber under press.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylic fiber contg. above 50 wt% of acrylonitrile and consisting of one or more kinds of copolymers copolymerizable with acrylonitrile is heated in air of 200W400, pref. 220W300°C for about 0.5W12 hr to flameproof the fiber. In case the fiber is not converted into a high bulk density mass prior to the flameproofing, the flameproofed fiber is converted into the mass and continuously activated with steam or CO2 as activating gas in an activation furnace under a press. of 0.005W2 kg/cm2 to obtain fibrous activated carbon of superior quality. The activation temp. is 700W1000°C and 800W1000°C in case of steam and CO2, respectively.
