Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain carbon fibers having improved performance rapidly and effectively, by spinning an acrylonitrile polymer, drawing the resultant fibers, treating the drawn fibers by the liquid-phase reaction, flameproofing the fibers, and carbonizing the flameproofed fibers.
CONSTITUTION: An acrylonitrile polymer containing 90mol% or more acrylonitrile is spun and drawn to give acrylonitrile fibers, which are then treated by the liquid-phase reaction to give a fibrous density of 1.20W1.30g/cm3. The resultant fibers are then brought into contact with a heated roll kept at 150W450°C to complete the flameproofing reaction. The flameproofed fibers are carbonized to give the aimed fibers. Preferably, the flameproofing reaction is completed to give the fibrous density of 1.30W1.50g/cm3. Acrylonitrile fibers having an orientation degree ≥0.35 measured by the infrared dichroic ratio are preferably used.
