Abstract

1433654 Reels INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 15 Oct 1974 [6 Dec 1973] 44714/74 Heading B8M A web winding spool comprises an axially tapered, generally cylindrical body 3, means 5 on the body 3 for holding an end of a web to be wound in contact with the body 3, and a flange 1 at the larger end of the tapered body 3 for abutting an edge of the web to maintain a straight edged formation of a roll during winding. As shown, the body 3 is provided with fluting or grooves 4 and has two longitudinal slots 5, preferably angled slightly, therein for holding the end of the web to be wound. The spool is formed as a hollow shell with a central bore 8 extending through a central moulding 9 having webs 10 extending therefrom to support the tapered cylindrical surface. The flange 1 is knurled at 2 for manual operation. The spool may be mounted either on a driven shaft or on a fixed shaft for free rotation. In the latter case, the spool is driven by a gear engaging teeth (11), Fig. 3 (not shown), on the flange 1. The spool may be made of plastics material, e.g. acetal resin, nylon, or chlorinated or fluorinated hydrocarbons, metal or wood.
